We have added the ability to update Lightning Services from the app in the latest Beta release: https://localwp.com/community/t/local-beta-5-9-5/23337
We are planning to promote this build to stable in the near future, but feel free to try in beta and give us feedback.

@Jessica Braun: thanks Jessica. Unfortunately I don’t have any services that need updates. But if you add PHP 8.0 I’ll certain use that.

I am reaching out on this Feature Request because I think we not only need a better way to update services in Local, but we need Local to be better at identifying that updates are available and update automatically.
This is because we are now starting to see some issues with PHP 7.4 for Mac users that run Big Sur. Here is a community post about this issue:
We have a user provide a workaround here:
They are using Clay's post here:
It appears there is something within Big Sur that is failing with PHP 7.4, but PHP has an update that fixes this. Any user that has had Local for a while and has old versions of the PHP service, they can't use PHP 7.4 on Big Sur until they update, and the method for updating isn't ideal. You need to delete a folder within Local so that the App re-downloads the service and gets the latest version.
If this was handled and automated by Local, no users would have seen this issue.

I take that back, I confused this feature request with a bug report related to zlib. 😅
However, we are planning on adding the ability to update Lightning Services in-app!

This has been fixed. See https://localwp.com/community/t/php-7-4-1-package-missing-zlib-extensions-macos-linux/17005/32?u=clay for more details.
Thanks for the report, Andy!
